Stachniak) In the early 1970s, the consumer electronics market was going through one of the hottest periods in its history. Advancements in microelectronics, especially in integrated circuit technologies, had made it possible to offer inexpensive desktop and, soon after, hand-held digital electronic calculators. In 1971, the promise of a calculator power at your finger tips (pledged by Bowmar Instrument, Cannon, and, soon after, by scores of other calculator manufacturers) was rapidly gaining social acceptance. It was the idea of a personal, inexpensive, powerful electronic calculating device for your own unrestricted use, always in your pocket, in your briefcase, or on your desk that made the pocket calculator one of the most desired electronic gadgets of the first half of the 1970s. Commodore Business Machines (founded in 1958 in Toronto) and Rapid Data Systems and Equipment Ltd. (incorporated in 1962 in Toronto) were the earliest Canadian companies that offered their own electronic desktop and pocket-sized calculators. Rapid Data's first calculator--the Rapidman 800--was introduced in February 1972 at the time when intense competition put immense pricing pressure to offer hand-held calculators for under $100 and the stores across North America were racing to be the first to sell them. In early 1972, to win the race, Alexander's--New York's iconic department store chain--ordered 20,000 Rapidman 800s to be sold at $99.99. In a short succession, the Rapidman 800 was followed by the 801, 802, 804, 812, and 824 hand-helds as well as 1208 (introduced in 1973), 1212, 1220, 2000, and 2001 desktop calculators. In his 2005 recollections written for York University Computer Museum, Henry Dasko--a former European Sales Manager at Rapid Data--describes the company's corporate history and his involvement with Rapid Data in the following way. "The year was 1971, late Spring. I had been in Canada for just over a year and was looking for a job. Ideally it would be something in exports. But most of Canada's exports were raw materials and commodities and I had no experience and no feel for that. Finally, I found an ad that seemed to give me a chance. An electronics company was looking for someone with languages. I applied and soon got a phone call. "You say you speak Russian," the voice said. "I do." "How many years did you study Russian?" "Fourteen." "OK, come for an interview." I did, to a modern, low building near the Toronto airport. "We make calculators," a well groomed, silver haired man told me. I had no idea what a calculator was. "A Soviet trade delegation is coming to see us. They would like to buy our technology. We are not going to sell it to them, but we will talk to them. Let’s see how well you do." I did well enough. The Russians left and I was told to return the following day. I had a low level job in the International Marketing Department. My boss was to be one Rick Denda, whom I hadn't met - he was travelling in Europe, but his silver Ferrari 330 and his white Mercedes sedan were sitting in the company lot. I liked him already. He returned soon and we got along fine. I familiarized myself with the product line and was told to gather as much information about competitive products as possible. Our most popular model was a pocket calculator named Rapidman 800. It had 8-digit [display] capacity and could perform four basic functions. Hang tab keys were molded into the case. Decimal point was fixed at 2. Individual LEDs were hand inserted into the PCB. It was difficult to align them, and they were almost always crooked. The unit was made on an electronics assembly line in London, Ontario. It sold for $100. Our biggest export market was in the US, where we had our own branch in Detroit. I had nothing to do with it. My responsibility was the secondary markets, where we dealt with export agents and distributors. We communicated via telex, which I learned to use. Selling was not a problem. We just could not get enough product. Everyone wanted it. Sometimes the requests were outrageous. "I am calling you from the cabinet of the president of Chile," Leslie Sebastian, a Hungarian expatriate yelled at me. "I want 100,000 calculators and I want them now. Every schoolchild in Chile is going to have his own machine. Chile will be the first in the world." Soon we had several competitors - American companies Texas Instruments and Bowmar, and the Japanese giant Sharp, which offered an elegant brushed aluminum box with large, glowing, diffused LEDs. There was also a Canadian competitor named Commodore. Its president was Jack Tramiel who, like me, was a Polish Jew. In Polish, his real name was Trzmiel, pronounced "Chmiel", which in Polish means "hornet". He was an Auschwitz survivor with a number tattooed on his forearm. A bear of a man. He started a typewriter service shop in the Polish area of Toronto. The president of our company, Clive Raymond, was very different. He was born in India, where his father was a British colonial officer. In Canada he ran an office equipment company named Roneo Vickers, which specialized in spirit duplicator machines. He was a portly, elegant man with commanding presence. I met our design engineers, who were responsible for technology development. Their names were Joe Kelly and Joe Tari and they both came from an academic background. Raymond gave them a long term contract and shares in Rapid Data. Soon our product line expanded. We added model 801 with a floating decimal point and a model 812 with 12-digit capacity and full memory. Rapidman 824 was one of the first to perform complex scientific calculations. We also made desktop calculators, powered by the mains. A 12-digits Rapidman 1212 and even more sophisticated Rapidman 1220, both using orange coloured gas discharge Panaplex displays we bought from Burroughs Corporation in New Jersey. We also made printing calculators, which recorded calculations on a paper ribbon. The printing heads came from Seiko Corporation in Japan. Most of our chips except for the small Rapidman 800 came from an aerospace company in California, named Rockwell International. Financing for our company came from the Eaton's Pension Fund, where Raymond knew people. Even though there weren't enough calculators to fill the orders, prices were plummeting. I understood it to be the rule in electronics. The same phenomenon had happened previously with transistor radios. I was doing well. Soon I was promoted to European Sales Manager and transferred to Shannon, Southern Ireland, where we had a distribution facility in a tax-free economic zone. But the company was not doing well. In printers, which were the most profitable product, we have fallen behind technology curve. Printing heads had a spinning roller, which in the first generation model emitted annoying buzz. Seiko subsequently developed a silent printer, but would only sell it to Japanese calculator makers. I understood then that it wasn't how many products you sold, but how much profit you made - a principle which stayed with me throughout my professional life. Rapid Data was losing money. Soon Rockwell and Eaton's demanded payments which we couldn't make. Even though we all worked very hard and the spirit of the company was fantastic, Rapid Data had to close down in the largest Canadian bankruptcy in Canadian history. We all lost our jobs. For me personally it was a very sad moment, but I have learned a lot and was confident of the future. I wasn't wrong - I had gained experience in electronics, and electronics was the name of the game. Within three months I had another job." In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. However, it was MCM which built and, later, manufactured the first microprocessor-based computer designed specifically for personal use — the first PC. MCM's first computer—the MCM/70—was designed in the period between 1972 and 73 and announced on September 25, 1973, in Toronto. The computer was unveiled in New York on September 27th and, the following day, in Boston. One of its early prototypes was demonstrated in May of 1973 during the Fifth International APL Users' Conference in Toronto. The MCM/70 computers were purchased in North America and Europe by acedemic institutions as well as large organizations and companies including Chevron Oil Research Company, Firestone, Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission, NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, and U.S. Army. Stachniak) In April, 1972, Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, California, announced its first 8-bit microprocessor — the 8008. In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. However, it was MCM which built the first microprocessor-based computer designed specifically for personal use — the MCM/70, the first PC. MCM built several prototypes of the MCM/70 before the computer's manufacturing began in mid-1974. All of them have their roots in the Key-Cassette concept developed by the company's co-founder and first president Mers Kutt. A drawing of it can be found in design notes that Kutt kept from late 1971 until mid 1974. It is among the oldest preserved sketches of a microcomputer to be manufactured specifically for personal use. The name `Key-Cassette' most likely derives from `Key-Edit' — the name of the key-edit system that was manufactured by Kutt's former company — Consolidated Computer Inc. The one-page sketch created in early 1972 depicts a case in the style of a typical desk-top calculator of that time with built-in keyboard, one-line display, cassette storage, and acoustic coupler with built-in modem for communication over phone lines. In addition, the Key-Cassette was to be programmed in the APL language. The Key-Cassette concept already expressed several key aspects of personal computing philosophy that MCM would be shaping in the coming years: that of an individual-focused complete computing environment, easy to learn and interact with. The annotated drawing provides enough information to grasp the basic operations of the Key-Cassette. The small 32-key keyboard of the Key-Cassette would allow the user to enter all the alphanumeric and numeric characters as well as the APL and special function symbols. To achieve such a degree of compactness, each key was designed to enter up to 5 symbols (using a combination of key strokes). The symbols on keycaps would be color coded to distinguish between the symbols that can be entered directly (red symbols in the center of keycaps) and those that can be entered via a combination of key strokes (black symbols placed in the corners of keycaps). The one line display of the Key-Cassette would allow the user to view a single line of APL code, a computer output, or an error message. Using the rotate keys `→' and `←' the displayed information could be scrolled left and right to fully reveal its contents. Using the roll keys `↓' and `↑', one would scroll through the lines of APL code. The sketch of the Key-Cassette is augmented with two drawings of possible segmented display elements: one comprised of 13 display segments and the other of 15 segments. Stachniak) In April, 1972, Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, California, announced its first 8-bit microprocessor — the 8008. In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. However, it was MCM which built the first microprocessor-based computer designed specifically for personal use — the MCM/70, the first PC. The MCM/800 was MCM's second generation computer. As was the case with the MCM/70, the /800's hardware was designed by Jose Laraya's team while Gord Ramer was the chief software engineer. From hardware and software point of view, the computer was similar to the MCM/70 PC. The /800  functioned under similar AVS/EASY operating system and had MCM/APL interpreter built-in. However, there were also significant differences. The new computer was not portable and was not powered by a single-chip microprocessor. Instead, the computer's CPU was implemented using bitslice technology with discrete components. While this design choice allowed to execute the same instruction set as the MCM/70's 8008 microprocessor at much higher speed, this technological switch marked MCM's departure from the microprocessor direction trailblazed by the company in the early 1970s. The computer was announced in July 1976 as "the combination of data processing and word processing for as little as $400 a month." It was targeted at problem solving and small business markets. In 1976, the computer was sold for between $8,400 (4KB ROM configuration) and $10,800 (16KB ROM configuration). (MIL) of Ottawa between 1972 and 1973.  The CPS-1 was powered by Canada's first microprocessor — the MIL 7114. The CPS-1 emulator was developed at York University Computer Museum between 2018-19. When the first such computers (commonly referred to as microcomputers) began to appear between 1973 and 1975, they caught attention of electronics hobbyists. Their enthusiasm for the ‘computers of their own’ gave birth to a strong microcomputer hobby movement that played a pivotal role in the social acceptance of personal computing. These were the computer hobbyists who challenged the traditional boundaries of computing and its social status, and helped making personal computer use and ownership a reality. Canada was not an exception. Several Canadian electronics hobbyists were members of the first amateur computer club -- the Amateur Computer Society formed by Stephen B. Gray in 1966. In 1974, a Torontonian electronics hobbyist Howard Franklin designed and constructed a fully functional microcomputer using MIL MF8008 8-bit microprocessor. His computer was possibly the earliest example of a Canadian hobby microcomputer and is one of the earliest hobby microcomputers ever designed. <img src="https://museum.eecs.yorku.ca/files/original/211cb4f044a2c4e7c3a6fd61f909ad4f.jpg" height:="" auto="" width="400" border="0" /> Howard Franklin reconnecting the boards of his MIL MF8008-based hobby microcomputer which he constructed in 1974. Franklin was one of many Canadian electronics enthusiasts reading popular hobby electronics magazines, most notably Radio Electronics and Popular Electronics, and working on construction projects published in them (building radios, amplifiers, etc.) During his high school days he had an opportunity to learn about computers and their programming thanks to educational initiatives such as the University of Waterloo computer days, the Toronto Board of Education summer computer programs, and the North York board of Education special computer clubs. In 1973, Franklin learned about the Intel 8008 microprocessor and decided to build his own computer using its clone--the MF 8008--manufactured by Microsystems International Ltd. (MIL) of Montreal. There was sufficient technical literature on the 8008 which included schematic diagrams of rudimentary microcomputers based on this microprocessor: the Intel SIM8-01 and the MIL MOD-8. The study of published circuitry was the starting point for Franklin's computer project. The most innovative contribution to the design was the front panel circuitry that allowed data and short programs to be keyed-in directly into his computer using the switches of the front panel. Franklin began the design of his computer in early 1974. His first set of schematic diagrams was ready on March 14th but it was revised on May 6th. The computer was operational by the end of that year and modified further through 1975. In 2004, Franklin recollected that the design and construction process was a great learning experience. He found debugging of the design time consuming but not frustrating: I would sit there and patiently debug wire by wire the design -- oh this is interesting because you have never done anything of that scale before. So debugging took a while. Although Franklin designed his computer completely by himself, he built it with the assistance of some of his colleagues. "Here is the design, would you like to help building it, programming it?" recollected Franklin in a 2004 interview. Acquiring all the components for Franklin's project wasn't an easy task. They were expensive not only for him but for many electronics hobbyists. According to Franklin, two companies that (indirectly) contributed to "solving" the computer components supply problem and inevitably supported the growth of the Canadian computer hobby movement were MIL and Consolidated Computer Inc. (CCI) of Ottawa. Components that were out of specs were finding their way into the hobbyists' hands through the backdoor. Some of the circuit boards used by Franklin came from CCI, the MF8008 CPU and memory from MIL. Franklin suspected that The management most likely knew about this, did not worry about things that were going on at the backdoor; they knew who the chips were going to, they were not going onto the grey commercial market, they were going out to students who were building things as hobbyists. Franklin's computer was assembled using wire wrap technique. Electronic components mounted on printed circuit boards were interconnected by wires, with the connections made by wrapping several turns of uninsulated sections of the wire around a component lead or a socket pin. Wire wrap tools and chip sockets were available via mail order or from numerous electronics stores that offered inexpensive wire wrap equipment to the hobbyists. This made the completion of Franklin's project feasible as soldering of all the connections would require the production of PCBs and would make debugging much more complicated. The primary I/O device interfaced to Franklin's computer was the Teletype Model 15 made by the Teletype Corporation (introduced by the company in 1930). In the 1960s, computer industry was switching from early teletype models, such as the 15, to newer models including the Teletype Models 33 and 35. Franklin recalled that in the early 1970s, The junkyards were full of the 15s and were happily given away rather than accumulated in storage. The hobbyists became quite skilled in making the 15s operational and quickly learned how to interface them with their hobby computers. Howard Franklin graduated from the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Toronto. One of his most successful projects was a microcomputer-based voting system for the Borough of North York completed in 1977 and in operation for several years. (The museum has full documentation of the system.) Franklin was also an active member of the Toronto Region Association of Computer Enthusiasts  (TRACE)-- arguably the earliest Canadian computer hobby organization. He was writing a column for the TRACE Newsletter on computer hardware. In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. However, it was MCM which built and, later, manufactured the first microprocessor-based computer designed specifically for personal use — the first PC. MCM's first computer—the MCM/70—was designed in the period between 1972 and 73 and announced on September 25, 1973, in Toronto. Stachniak) In April, 1972, Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, California, announced its first 8-bit microprocessor — the 8008. In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. However, it was MCM which built the first microprocessor-based computer designed specifically for personal use — the MCM/70, the first PC. The MCM/70 was designed in the period between 1972 and 73. From the hardware and software engineering point of view it didn't have much in common with early hobby computers, such as the iconic MITS Altair 8800 or Apple I, except that all these computers were microprocessor based. By the time the Altair 8800 kit was offered to hobbyists in the early 1975, with its minuscule 256 bytes of RAM memory and without any high-level programming language to program it, the MCM microcomputers were providing software support for practical applications ranging from engineering design, modeling and simulation to investment analysis and education. By the time the Apple 1 board was offered for sale in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak—co-founders of Apple Computers—the MCM machines were utilized by Chevron Oil Research Company, Firestone, Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission, NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, and U.S. Army, just to name some of the installations of the MCM hardware in North America. The official announcement of the MCM/70 came on September 25, 1973, in Toronto. The computer was unveiled in New York on September 27th and, the following day, in Boston. One of its early prototypes was demonstrated in May of 1973 during the Fifth International APL Users' Conference in Toronto. The company maintained that the MCM/70 was "of a size, price and ease-of-use as to bring personal computer ownership to business, education, and scientific users previously unserved by the computer industry.'' The manufacturing of the MCM/70 started in mid 1974. The computer used the Intel 8008 microprocessor as the CPU and featured both resident and virtual memory. The computer was equipped with built-in plasma display, APL keyboard, and up to two cassette drives. The cassettes were used for storage and retrieval of data and applications software, as well as for the implementation of virtual memory which provided the user with up to 200 Kbytes of memory. The computer's ROM contained an operating system and an APL interpreter. In 1974 and 1975, the computer could be purchased for between $4,700 and $9,800 depending on the hardware configuration. Three models of the MCM/70 were offered: 702 (2KB of RAM and no cassette drives), 704 (4KB of RAM and a single cassette drive), and 708 (8KB of RAM and two cassette drives). Stachniak) In April, 1972, Intel Corp. of Santa Clara, California, announced its first 8-bit microprocessor — the 8008. In just a few months, the prototypes of the first general purpose computers powered by the 8008 chip were already working on site at the French company Réalisations et Études Électroniques located in the suburbs of Paris and at Micro Computer Machines (MCM) with headquarters situated on the outskirts of Toronto. These firms fully recognized, articulated, and acted upon the immense potential of the budding microprocessor technology for the development of a new generation of cost effective computing systems. MCM announced its first computer—the MCM/70—in September 1973. The computer—arguably the first microprocessor-powered computer designed specifically for personal use—was followed by three more generations of MCM desktops: the MCM/800 was unveiled in 1976, the MCM/900 in 1978, and the MCM Power in 1980. In early 1980, MCM made a decision to evolved its best selling MCM/900 system into a multi-user, distributed data processing network that shared peripherals and a common file system. The new system—the MCM Power—was to "bridge the gap between the small business systems and the large, complex computers which are beyond the reach of most businesses." As its MCM predecessors—the MCM/70, /800, and /900—the Power offered an APL environment and virtual memory that significantly extended the amount of memory available to users. To achieve a multi-user, distributed data processing network, MCM supported its new computer with a software package consisting of Powerlink, Powernet, and Powercomm programs. Powerlink provided a universal interface between a Power system and a wide selection of peripherals. Up to 200 uniquely addressable devices could be interfaced including printer/plotters, analog/digital converters, etc. The MCM Powernet software allowed to share data storage and output media by several Power computers. Finally, the MCM Powercomm facilitated serial data transmission as well as interactive communications with large-scale computer systems. The computer was announced in mid-1980. It's single-user stripped-down version—the MicroPower—was offered the same year. Title A name given to the resource ATI Collection Description An account of the resource ATI Technologies Inc. was an electronics corporation and a world leader that specialized in the design, development, and manufacture of computer graphics solutions and chipsets for computer desktop and notebook platforms as well as workstation, set-top box, game console and handhold markets. The company was founded in 1985 in Markham, Ontario as Array Technology Inc. (or ATI) by K.Y. Ho, Lee Ka Lau, Benny Lau, and Francis Lau. ATI's first successful line of integrated graphics cards (sold to IBM and Commodore) allowed the company to rapidly grow into one of the leading manufacturers in its sector and to go public in 1993. By 2001, its revenues exceeded US $1 billion. ATI introduced several lines of graphics cards and chipsets including EGA and VGA Wonder in the late 1980s, the Mach8, 32, and 64 in the early 1990s, Rage and All-in-Wonder in the second half of the 1990s, and the Radeon line of graphics products in the early 2000s. In 2006, ATI was acquired by Advanced Micro Devices (or AMD) which continued to use the ATI branding until 2010. Description An account of the resource DATAR (Digital Automatic Tracking and Remoting) was a comprehensive digital electronic system developed at the Royal Canadian Navy between late 1940s and early 1950s. Its purpose was to assist and aid naval command during complex naval warfare situations caused by large volume of high speed targets (e.g. airplanes and submarines). DATAR was to provide the command with a complete, up-to-date, and accurate picture of the tactical and strategic situations. It was to rapidly analyze data received from a variety of sources and to provide the necessary information and issue commands to all the ships linked by the DATAR network. DATAR was a brainchild of Royal Canadian Navy Lieutenant  James Louis Belyea. The first known proposal for the system was summarized in his  April 15, 1948 document entitled DATAR. A successful demonstration of DATAR  took place in Fall 1953 on Lake Ontario using a three-ship convoy  consisting of two Bangor-class minesweepers (HMCS Granby and Digby) and the third ship simulated by a shore station on the Scarborough Bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario. At the heart of the demonstrated DATAR system were three special-purpose digital computers built by Ferranti Electric Ltd, Toronto, and installed on the ships. Canadian, American and British military observing the demonstration were impressed with the system's performance and potential. It is difficult to overestimate DATAR's historical significance. The project contributed to the creation of the first  Canadian computer companies (e.g. Computing Devices of Canada), originated the first digital electronics research centers within Canadian companies (e.g. the Electronics Division of Ferranti Electric Ltd.), and spawned the first generation of digital electronics engineers. DATAR also resulted in the development and demonstration of the first wireless computer communications network and of the installation and operation of an electronic digital computer equipment in a mobile environment. It introduced novel digital transmission equipment, input and display devices  (the trackball and a new generation of radar tracker displays). In the words of Arthur Porter, director of research at Ferranti Electric's Electronics Division, DATAR was "the most advanced system of its kind in the world." Now, DATAR symbolizes Canada's early entrance into computer age at the end of the 1940s. In 1958, due to claimed high costs of development, the construction of the full scale DATAR system was canceled. Some historians conjectured that all the technical reports on DATAR have either been destroyed or lost. However, in 2021, Belyea estate donated J.L Belyea's archive to YUCoM. At least this collection of documents offers a glimpse into the creation of DATAR -- one of the most significant  Canadian technological achievements.
